Right now, home remodeling is on the rise across the US for a number of reasons. Primarily, the reason is a shortage of attractive homes in the marketplace. Currently, in most areas, it is a seller’s market which means that, with home prices high, it makes more sense for homeowners to refinance or keep the terms of their existing 30 year mortgage and put money back into their existing homes. What that means is that people are renovating baths and kitchens, building additions, finishing basements and replacing worn roofs in hopes that they will be in a better position to sell down the road when they are more prepared to also act as a buyer.

On the flip side, not everyone everywhere is having an easy time selling their homes. Kiplinger recently released a list of common reasons that homes do not sell easily. In addition to a lack of curb appeal and asking prices being too high, a main reason that many houses won’t sell is the homeowner’s reluctance towards upgrades. It’s tough to imagine replacing countertops, carpet or cabinets for another family to use, but if your home is that dated, sooner or later you have to face the reality that other sellers (your competition) are upgrading homes prior to sale. Sometimes it’s just about keeping up with the Joneses.
